Emily Wyatt is the commissioning editor of Polydor Records. It was interesting to see her view on the use of music video to promote an artist. One of the key points mentioned by Emily was the how the focus on the videos have moved from television such as MTV or VH1 to the online market through companies like VEVO and VIMEO. Some of the artists that Emily and Polydor have worked with include: Ellie Goulding, The 1975, James Blake and The Maccabees. The distribution onto Youtube also effected the radio playlists, the view count gives the radio station something to base the popularity of the music.
As Emily is not the one who chooses the budget for the films, this means she has to make decisions once the budget has been made. An example of this is when it is a well known artist she is more likely to receive a larger budget and can indulge in a more well known director and a more impressive set. The smaller artists is much more of a challenge though as she will have to choose an unknown director which would always be considered a risk as it is impossible to be certain of their quality.

My Third Idea
My third idea is adverting the stereotypes of rappers singing about wealth, women and drugs. I have an idea of a rap singer in a run down area of East London such as Peckham or Tottenham. And rather than having them talk about having come from the slums and have now reached success and money, they would sing about how their in the position and and trying to make it to the top. I think this would be a successful idea because it would inspire young rappers from deprived backgrounds.
Rappers that sing about their wealth include 50 cent and Snoop Dogg, personally i think this could have a negative effect on some people because it could make them jealous and dislike them. Whereas if the artist is seen as a likeable figure, the public may be more inclined to help their cause.
The only artist who I can thing of who has done a similar thing is Dizzee Rascal, not in that he sings about him being from a rough upbringing, but he sings with a thick East London accent and definitely a large part of his success has come through his image of being a Londoner through and through.

My Second Idea
My second idea was very different to the first one, in fact the complete opposite type of mood and genre! This one would be set in a hospital in a very dark and cold environment. Each of the band members would be on hospital beds or getting treated whilst playing their instruments. This would show the audience that they are passionate about music and even serious illness or injury wont stop them playing. This puts the image in the viewers head that music is the only thing that really matters in their lives.
This would also create the idea that music acted as a pain killer for them, and without music their lives would be miserable but playing music makes it bearable. This music of the band would clearly reflect this, it would have to be depressing, grunge music, potentially a song by 'The Smashing Pumpkins'. I think this would really help portray the image of the band and would make viewers sympathise with them. I think people would want to watch this video more than once.

My First Idea
My favourite of my 3 ideas was going to be cheesy pop song in which there would be a boy who was seen as one of the schools most popular, good-looking guys who would fall in love with a stereotypically unattractive girl who would be more interested in her studies rather than her social life, therefore being seen as a 'geek' by the other students. Due to the fact that he had a large reputation to live up to, he would have to hide this love in front of his friends at school. This would make the girl upset and feel unwanted, as if the love was unrequited.
The boy would see the effects of what he had done and start to change his ways because he feels like his feelings for her were more important than his reputation and started to change his ways. This was too late though and his previous actions had changed her views towards him and therefore did no longer feel the same way. This would upset the boy massively and he would look stupid in front of all his friends.
I think this could be set in America as it would be easier to portray the stereotypes clearer as you could make the boy potentially an American football jock, this would mean showing his sensitive side would massively advert the stereotype of them. I dont have an exact song to go with this idea but I was thinking along the lines of Taylor Swift or similar artists but it would be sung by the girl about the poor treatment of the boy and how he got what he deserved.
The things that have influenced me on this idea include the music video and lyrics for Teenage Dirtbag- Wheatus but this is slightly different because it is the other way round and the girl is seen as the more socially acceptable and the boy is seen as a loser. Another influence was the film Grease, this is a very similar story to the love story between Danny and Sandy. I have tried to incorporate these 2 ideas and some of my own into one, to make this.
